Our home is where we live with those we treasure the most. It is the place where we reside. It is where we keep what belongs to us, what we love and value the most and what we need to live each day. Our home is also where we grow most complacent and ungrateful, where we overstep and take for granted. When we think about living a life of wholeness and walking out a journey toward healing, it makes sense to begin at home. What do I mean?
My journey toward healing must begin with me, my heart and my own issues. I am the one most responsible for me! I am responsible for my actions, my attitudes and even the ways in which I interpret life around me. In light of this, I can feel a sense of “control” even if the world around me is in chaos and spinning out of control. I believe in having the priority of learning about myself in a way that improves my own quality of life. I believe in strengthening the voice inside me that discerns truth from lies, reality from deception, and proper action from damaging reaction. Most importantly, I believe in fine-tuning and gaining confidence in my relationship with the One who lives within me and helps me do all this. When I think of beginning my journey toward wholeness and personal healing, I think the primary focus should be securing my heart and my relationship with the Lord. This is the core of my life and the most intimate relationship I have. It is also the relationship I will abide in forever, as I enjoy the salvation I have been given.
My home is far more than the building I care for and decorate. More than anything, it is the context in which I reveal my true self and cultivate life with the people I love and cherish the most. My home is the family God has given me, including the relationships within it that may be broken or wounded. I must make time for them. I must make sacrificial time for the overall health of my family. I must put special effort into the environment surrounding my marriage and my children. In fact, in order for my healing to develop and flourish, I need to learn how to live in my home in a way that is intentionally life-giving and does not sabotage their chances for meaningful relationships and encounters with the Lord. I know that, as I choose this, I begin to heal in new ways. Making choices about my words and attitudes, as well as praying in love for others, are non-negotiables. Why? Because my journey is one that begins at home, but then moves beyond that into a world that needs healing as well.
If I care for myself, and if I care for my family, providing the best chance at health and a full life, I am best prepared to impact the world around me! The journey begins at home. My home is where I live with those I treasure the most. It isn’t anyone else’s responsibility to care for my home. It is mine. This is my journey. It begins here.
